Performing CPR: What You Should Know

If you find yourself in a situation where someone is suffering from cardiac arrest and needs CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), there are steps you can take to make sure you’re doing it right.

  • Check to see if the person needs CPR by checking their pulse. If there is no pulse, begin chest compressions immediately for about two minutes. If there is a pulse, continue with rescue breaths until emergency services arrive.
  • Use 100-120 compressions per minute in an adult or child and 60 compressions per minute in an infant. In between each compression, allow the chest to rise completely before giving another compression.
  • Do 30 chest compressions or five breaths before checking again for a pulse or signs of breathing (like coughing).
